How much time should your marketing actually take?

Most owners are the marketing bottleneck — the profile half-done, the site untouched for years. A managed system should cost you an hour a month.

I’m Keith Groben. After twenty years working with local service business owners, here’s the pattern I see in almost every shop. The Google Business Profile is half-set-up. The website hasn’t been touched in years. Not because the owner doesn’t care — because there’s never a spare hour. The work that would win them more customers keeps losing to the work in front of them.

Why is your marketing always half-done?

Because you’re the bottleneck, and you’re already buried. You built something good with your hands, you’re booked, you’re working hard — and the marketing sits at the bottom of the list every single day. The profile stays half-built. The site stays stuck in 2022. Meanwhile a competitor who isn’t as good as you looks sharper online, so the customer goes with whoever looks safer.

That’s not a discipline problem. It’s a time problem. There was never an hour to give it.

So how much time should it take?

Here’s the number I hold us to: about one hour a month, after the first month. That’s it. You hand one project manager an hour, and the whole system runs on the back end — your Google profile gets managed, your website grows, your content keeps you looking alive. You run the business. We run the system.

The first month takes a little more — we’re getting the system stood up, learning your shop, building. After that, an hour a month. Not your evenings. Not another job stacked on top of the one you already have.

The system does the assembly-line work

The reason an hour a month is even possible is that the repetitive work lives in software. Humans where humans matter, software where software belongs. The plan is already written and proven. Nobody’s reinventing it for you on the clock. The system gets better every month it runs — not more expensive — and it doesn’t need you sitting in meetings to do it.

The freedom your business was supposed to give you shouldn’t get eaten by the marketing it needs. An hour a month is the whole deal.
