What I learned $3 million to $60 million

What I learned watching a company grow fast.

When we started with the company, it made about $3 million a year or less, depending on who you ask. Within a couple of years, it made $60 million or more a year. I saw from the inside what that kind of growth takes.

How did I get into marketing?

After a year in sales, I was promoted into marketing.

The company didn’t have a marketing department. It relied on in-person, door-to-door sales to bring in customers. So I started everything from the ground up.

I laid down what I knew before. Over the next year, I learned brand-new skills and techniques. As I learned them, I put them to work. And I had success at my job.

What was I doing on the side?

I also joined a freelancing website and sold my skills as a sales copywriter. I had success there too. I earned quite a bit of money in both places.

With freelancing, sometimes a client told me how my work did. Other times they didn’t. My piece was one part of a bigger puzzle they were putting together.

At my job, it was different. I saw the results directly.

What did I see?

I saw marketing campaigns bring back exponential results.

I saw what happens when marketing supports a sales team instead of working alone. The sales team already knew how to close. Marketing put more of the right people in front of them.

What did it take to grow that fast?

Four things worked together:

  1. A good team. The right people in the right seats.
  2. Great operations that could scale and grow. My wife was a key part of that.
  3. A strong sales team. It was already there before I moved into marketing.
  4. Marketing support for that sales team. That was my part. It amplified their results.

What does this mean for your business?

Here’s what I took from it:

  • Marketing multiplies what’s already working. A strong sales team gets stronger with good marketing behind it.
  • Growth needs operations that can hold it. More customers means more to deliver.
  • You have to see the results. At my job I saw each campaign’s results. That’s how I learned what worked.

That’s why my wife and I work on both sides. I help with marketing. She helps with operations and strategy.

Why does this matter for kingdom businesses?

God had answered my prayer, “Teach me how to sell.” But He didn’t forget why He was teaching me.

Those skills were never meant to stay in one company. They were meant for kingdom business owners, kingdom entrepreneurs, churches and ministries. People who will put their growth to work for Great Commission results.

FAQ

Can marketing grow a company by itself?

No. In my experience, growth took a good team, operations that could scale, a strong sales team and marketing that supported sales.

What does marketing do for a sales team?

It puts more of the right people in front of the sales team. That amplifies the results they already know how to get.

What is a sales copywriter?

A writer who writes words that sell: ads, emails, sales pages and letters that lead a reader to buy or reach out.
